Workshop

The Early Memory Procedure (EMP) is a projective test of autobiographical memory developed by Arnold Bruhn and used frequently in Therapeutic Assessment around the world and in psychotherapy in the United States and in Europe. In this introductory workshop, Dr. Finn will teach the basic theory underlying the EMP, describe how to administer and interpret it, review research on the EMP, and show a video of himself discussing the EMP with an actual client. Then participants will have the chance to interpret an EMP protocol together and role play discussing it with “a client” with support from Dr. Finn and the Danish psychologists Mette Kyung Reacroft, and Nina Madsen Sjö, who are helping facilitate the workshop.

The EMP can be used in psychotherapy by clinicians who otherwise do not do psychological assessment with their clients. EMP can also be used as part of more comprehensive assessment batteries and are suitable for children from the age of 4, adolescents, and adults.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain Bruhn’s “cognitive-perceptual theory” underlying the EMP
  • Summarize research findings about the EMP
  • Administer the EMP to psychotherapy and assessment clients
  • Interpret clients’ EMP responses • Collaboratively discuss clients’ EMP responses with them
  • Know important safeguards for using the EMP with clients
  • Describe how the EMP may be used during a longer psychotherapy

All workshop participants will be offered the chance to take the EMP by themselves prior to the workshop and will be sent careful instructions, how to do it. It will be possible to schedule a session with an experienced psychologist to learn more about your individual EMP post workshop for an additional fee. This is highly recommended as important part of learning how to use the EMP with clients. Also, participants will be able to purchase copies of the Danish translation of the EMP if they wish to take the EMP themselves.
